Classic Bread Pudding

I had bread pudding at a buffet this weekend and it inspire me to bake one at home too.  There’s nothing like a warm bread pudding with a vanilla sauce to make any day perfect!  The recipe below is a basic pudding recipe; but since I love chocolates, I  incorporated chocolate pieces in, and made a vanilla sauce to complement it.  So Yummy!

==================================

Makes 6-8 servings (depending on your appetite)

1 pound loaf of bread  (any kind will do, but crusty french bread I think is best)
3 large eggs
2 cups milk (or half&half, if you like to cut calories)
1/2 sugar
2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
5 oz chocolate, chopped coarsely

If you don’t like the crust, trim it off the bread; If you like crusts like I do, leave it. Cut loaf into 3/4 inch-thick slices.  Arrange 8-10 slices diagonally in a buttered 8-inch square pan, overlap the slices to fit and don’t let it extend above the sides of the pan. Tuck the chocolate pieces between the slices of bread and sprinkle some on top too.

In a bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and nutmeg (if using).  Whisk the mixture until well-blended and slowly pour over the bread. Let stand until bread absorbed most of the liquid, this will take about 30-40 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Bake the soaked bread in the oven for about 30 minutes or until custard no longer flows in center when the pan is tilted and the top is browned.

Serve warm with vanilla sauce.

Yummylicious! :)
