Apple Crumble

This recipe is from Jamie Oliver. My family and I love apple pie, I make it every weekend when there apples but this weekend, we only have 3 fuji apples left so I thought of making apple crumble instead. I like Jamie’s recipe because it’s quicker and easier to make. It pre-cooks the apples first so the bake time is shorter and in about half an hour- from prep to finish- it’s done.

I used muscovado sugar ( for the apples) instead of regular granulated sugar, thinking it would make this dessert more healthier and guilt-free; it is in a way that but it altered the taste for me, the  molasses in muscovado over-powered the taste of apples.   I should have used light brown sugar like what I do with apple pie but my mind was “clouded”, I made this after over an hour of doing workout and I don’t want to “waste” my work-out effort…

But everyone liked it,  including me when I think about how much better it is for my health but I still prefer the regular taste of apple crumble, so  next time I’ll  stick to the recipe or use light brown sugar.

The recipe is great, my decision to replace the sugar, hmm, maybe not a good idea, taste-wise;  but for those who want something healthier, this is a better choice and it does improved in taste when cooled to room temperature.

But I was thinking.. we eat our apple crumble  plain, no ice cream, no cream or anything; maybe that’s why I find the taste of muscovado a little off for this recipe but otherwise, I don’t think it would matter because the ice cream is sweet and creamy and you wouldn’t notice the taste difference that much if not at all.  Given that, I think this recipe is worth trying and worth sharing..

RECIPE FOR APPLE CRUMBLE
adapted from Jamie Oliver’s recipe
serves 5

Ingredients:

For the crumble:
• 35g rolled oats ( I used quick-cooking)
• 35g flour
• 20g caster sugar
• 35g margarine or butter

For the filling:
• 400g cooking apples, peeled, cored and quartered ( I sliced mine thinly)
• 50g sugar, to sweeten
• 1 tablespoon water

Here’s how:

Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5.  Peel and core the apples, quarter and cut in to chunks.

Put the apples in to a pan with the sugar and water. Cook over a low heat for 5 minutes and place in a small oven proof dish.

Place the flour and oats in a bowl and mix well. Cut the margarine or butter in to small cubes and add this to the oats and flour. Mix with your fingertips until it resembles an even crumb texture. Add the sugar and mix through.

Cover the fruit with the crumble mixture. Bake for approximately 20 minutes until the crumble is golden and the apple hot.

Enjoy!
