These bars are very very delicious and addictive..it’s more popularly known in the Philippines as food for the gods…you simply have to taste it to find out if it deserves the monicker.
I don’t really know why this is called food for the gods..some say because of the ingredients -dates and walnuts are not easily available in the Philippines before, even now it’s not widely available and can be very expensive-others said because it’s heavenly-delicious like an ambrosia ( the food/drink of the gods); it could be both but what I know for sure is: this is a really, really good bar and it’s so easy and quick to make too; no special equipment needed. The only hassle I find here is the chopping of the dates and nuts.
Don’t be surprised if you find it oily, keep in mind it has a cup of butter in it ( which is what makes it delicious..but I used margarine as substitute, only because I can’t take too much dairy these days); if you want you can reduce it to 3/4 cups like what I do. I’ve also tried making these with combination of brown sugar and granulated Splenda ..the result is not as good (in my opinion) but lesser in calories of course which is good if you’re watching your weight..I still prefer the original recipe though when I make these which is not that often because this is a very rich bar and I have low no self-control when it comes to sweets.

Food For The Gods (Date and Walnut Bar)
Ingredients
2 eggs
2 cups sugar (I sometimes replaced this with 1 2/2 cup Splenda and 1/2 cup brown sugar)
1 cup butter, melted
1 cup walnuts, chopped
1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanillaPreheat oven to 300F. Grease and flour a 13×9x2inch baking pan. Set aside
In a bowl, beat eggs lightly, Add sugar, butter, vanilla, nuts and dates. Combine flour and baking powder, fold this to the wet ingredients. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 30-40 minutes or until done (when a toothpick/knife inserted in the middle comes out clean or dry ). Cool slightly and cut into bars while still warm.. Serve with your favorite cup of tea or coffee..Yum!
